vRSLCM upgrade stuck at installing

With the release of the vRealize Suite 8.4 a few days ago it is that time again to update my lab to take a deeper look into to all the new features of the products released.

As part of the upgrade cycle the first part of this was to upgrade my existing instance of VMware LifeCycle Manager. The upgrade is fairly simple and follows the same process as we have previously documented in the post Upgrade vRSLCM. This time though during the actual installation the upgrade appeared to stall, and after a few hours still had not completed. The installer progress bar showed that it was endlessly cycling.

On checking the logs I verified that there was no activity. Rebooting the appliance showed the progress to still be stuck. At this point I could have reverted to my snapshot taken before the upgrade. However I was curious how to restart the install without such a measure.

Resolution

Take a snapshot.
Log in via SSH to the VRSLCM VM and then remove upgradeprogress file located in /etc.

rm /etc/updateprogress

Once the file has been removed I navigated to another tab in LCM and then re-check system upgrade tab again. At that point I was able to re-initiate the Install which progressed without issue.

VMware KB 81402 published 5/5/21

***Updated 4/4/22***

I have been upgrading to vRSLCM 8.7 today and run into the same issue again after months of successful upgrades. The only change to the above is that the command is slightly different once logged in via SSH

rm /etc/upgradeprogress

  1. I am upgrading vRSLCM 8.7 to 8.8 and facing this issue. I run follow your guide to run this command “rm /ertc/upgradeprogress” and retry the upgrade without issue. Thanks for sharing.
