Deploy vROPS 8 from vRSLCM 8

In this post we will use the recently deployed vRealize Suite Lifecycle Manager instance in order to deploy vRealize Operations Manager.

The DNS A and PTR records required by the vROPs instance have been pre-created.

Download Product Binary

First goto Add Product Binary within vRSLCM and search for the correct vROPS 8 Install binary. Select and click Add.

This will cause the binary to start downloading

Progress can be monitored from the Requests page

Create a self signed certificate

In the Add Certificate section of vRSLCM we can select to create a new self signed certificate for use by vROPS later. Here there is only one node that we intend to deploy. If there were more nodes in the cluster their details should be entered here. Give the certificate a name that will identify it later.

Create the environment and deploy

As this is a new vRSLCM instance we need to first create a new environment in which vROPS will be deployed. Goto Environments and click on Create Environment. When the wizard opens enter the required details. Here we have called the environment “Stockholm vRealize” and set the relevant admin email and datacenter. Click next when complete.

The previous binary download has completed. We can select the products we which to deploy into our new environment. Clicking on the vRealize Operations tab allows us to import an existing vROPS deployment or create a new install. Selecting new install allows us to pick the version and the deployment type and node count. This is a lab so we will deploy a single small appliance. Click next when complete.

The next screen present the EULA for the product to be deployed. Read and accept by scrolling and clicking next.

You are now asked to select the correct license for your product. Already we had synced vRSLCM with the license and so it can be picked directly.

Now we can select the self signed certificate created earlier. It should be available in the dropdown list.

On the infrastructure tab enter details regarding where the vROPs deployment should be placed and click next.

On the network tab we can specify some of the details for our nodes that are about to be deployed. Click next when complete.

In this deployment there is only going to be one node deployed. Enter the details for that node. If there were more we could set them up here along with their vROPS role i.e Master, Replica, Data etc. Click next when complete.

The wizard will now carry out a pre-check to ensure that all the details entered are correct. Press Run Pre-Check. It will check that the DNS names exist, NTP works, the certificate is valid etc. If all is well everything will pass. If not this must be rectified before proceeding. Click next when ready.

The final screen shows a summary of all the details entered. This is a final chance to double check. Once ready click submit to begin deployment.

Under Request Details we can find our deployment job and follow progress. Depending on the size of the deployment this could take some time and have various stages. This view allows us to see where the progress is should anything cause it to fail. In this deployment there are 7 stages that must be completed.

Once complete the Request Details page will show success. vROPS is now up and running.

Log in and Configure vROPS

We can log in and start configuring the product. Browse to the URL https://sto-vrops01 and login as admin.

We are presented with the Welcome page from which we can begin to set up our first cloud account. In this instance we will connect to our MGMT vCenter. Click Create Cloud Account

Click on vCenter

Click Add Account

Enter the relevant information for the vCenter

Once you click Add or Test Connection you will be presented with the certificate for the vCenter. If this is correct click Accept. vROPS will now start collecting Metrics and Properties from vCenter.

Finally, logging into the admin interface https://sto-vrops01/admin we can see that the node is online and healthy.
